Telford Tempest Unvented Hot Water Cylinders Main Page

Telford Tempest Hot Water Cylinders

A reliable supply of hot water makes everyday life easier, from morning showers to washing up after dinner. If you’re replacing an older cylinder or planning a heating upgrade, choosing the right hot water storage system deserves careful consideration.

Telford Tempest Cylinders include options for different heating systems and property layouts. In this guide, we’ll explore the Tempest Indirect and Indirect Horizontal models, explain the difference between Direct and Indirect hot water cylinders, and highlight what to discuss with your plumbing and heating specialist.

What Are Telford Tempest Hot Water Cylinders

Telford’s Tempest range includes stainless steel unvented hot water cylinders. An unvented cylinder takes its cold water supply from the mains and stores heated water ready for use around your home. The wider range includes Indirect, Direct, slimline, horizontal and dedicated heat pump options. This gives homeowners several configurations to consider when replacing or upgrading their hot water system.

The Telford Tempest Indirect uses an internal coil to transfer heat from a gas or oil boiler into the stored water. A factory-fitted 3kW immersion heater provides an alternative source of heat when required.

According to Telford, this model features:

·       Duplex stainless steel construction for corrosion resistance.

·       Insulation to help limit heat loss.

·       An external expansion vessel.

·       Capacities from 90 to 500 litres.

·       A supplied unvented installation kit.

For households using a compatible boiler, an Indirect hot water cylinder is an option to discuss with an installer. The appropriate capacity will depend on your hot water demand and the performance of the heating system.

Limited headroom can make fitting a conventional upright cylinder difficult. The Telford Tempest Indirect Horizontal offers a different layout for installations where height is restricted.

Like the upright Indirect model, it uses an internal coil connected to a gas or oil boiler. Telford supplies it with a factory-fitted 3kW immersion heater, an external expansion vessel, an unvented kit and mounting cradles.

Its horizontal design can help resolve space constraints, but the installation still needs enough room for pipework, controls and future servicing. Your installer should assess access and support requirements before recommending a location.

Direct vs Indirect Hot Water Cylinders

The main difference is how the stored water is heated.
Cylinder type Main heating method Typical application
Indirect Heat transferred from a boiler through an internal coil Homes with a compatible gas or oil boiler
Direct Electric immersion heaters heat the stored water Homes using electricity for water heating
The Tempest Direct comes with two factory-fitted 3kW immersion heaters. Telford describes it as particularly suited to properties where electricity is the available heat source. Suitable controls can allow heating schedules to be matched to household routines and electricity tariffs.

An immersion heater in an Indirect cylinder does not make it a Direct model: the Indirect cylinder’s main heat source remains the boiler and internal coil.

How to Choose the Right Hot Water Cylinder

Start with your household’s daily routine. The number of occupants matters, but so do bath sizes, shower use and whether several outlets regularly run together.

Before recommending a cylinder, a plumbing and heating specialist should assess:

  • Hot water demand: How much stored hot water your household needs.
  • Available space: Cylinder dimensions, installation access and servicing clearance.
  • Heating compatibility: Whether the model suits your boiler or other heat source.
  • Incoming water supply: The pressure and flow available at the property.
  • Running costs: Your energy tariff, heating controls and usage patterns.

If you have a heat pump, ask about a cylinder specifically designed for that application. Telford lists dedicated heat pump models separately within its Tempest cylinder range.

Professional Hot Water Cylinder Installation

Choosing the cylinder is only part of the job. Correct installation, commissioning and maintenance all contribute to dependable performance.

Use an installer qualified to work on unvented hot water systems, and follow the manufacturer’s servicing instructions. Keep the installation paperwork and check the warranty conditions for your chosen model.
